Curriculum Deeper Dive: Creating a Comprehensive Map for Thoughtful Simulation Integration

Overview of Course

This course will provide participants with the opportunity to analyze their institution's program of study and/or course curriculum map. With these skills faculty systematically integrate simulation teaching activities to appropriately align with program and course learning outcomes. Methods to assess curricular gaps and ways to appropriately fill gaps using simulation strategies will be explored. Curriculum standards, simulation methods, and staffing issues will be systematically examined for teaching knowledge, skills, and attitudes.

Are you a simulation novice? We recommend you start with the Foundation Courses to build a strong portfolio in simulation education best practices. It is recommended that participants have prior foundational knowledge and experience with simulation pedagogy before enrolling in our Deeper Dive Courses.

Course Objectives:

By the end of the session, participants will:

1. Discuss curriculm and integration of simulation strategies in academic programs.

2. Examine current curriculum and placement of simulation cases.

3. Identify scenarios that can be mapped to course, lab, and/or clinical objectives based on goals and initiatives established for the simulation program.

4. Establish a strategy to assess staffing for simulation curriculum implementation.

Benefits of SIRC Courses

The National League for Nursing (NLN) Simulation Innovation Resource Center (SIRC) presents a series of reimagined, virtual courses designed to offer professional development in simulation education.

Nursing education continues to evolve to meet the challenges learners face when developing their thinking skills and translating them into action, within the context of patient care. Simulation-based education consists of a wide collection of teaching strategies, underpinned by theory and evidence, that aim to support learners in their emergence as competent and caring clinicians. Developing, implementing and evaluating immersive and evidence-based simulation experiences for learners require that nurse educators develop a highly specialized skill set in the art and science of dialogue, teaching pedagogy and psychological safety.
